every year in march/april a family-group of orcas comes to peninsula valdés in argentina to hunt for the newly born sea lion puppies, that are learning to swim in the shallow waters, right at the beach. the orcas risk their lives because they risk to strand on the beach. nevertheless this group of orcas - singular in the world - continues to hunt on the beach, young orcas learning the technique from their mothers.
in the middle of may, when the sea ice melts and breaks more and more open, a lot of algae grows underneath the ice at the edge where the landfast ice meets the open ocean. this line is called the floe edge, or the line of life, because the whole food chain comes together here: the smallest water animals feeding on the growing algae, fish and seabirds feeding on those, whales and seals feeding on the fish and the polar bear feeding on seals and whales.
